How to remove paint from wood | Beginners Guide | Part 2
This video covers wood paint removal and wood lustre restoration after stripping. In How to Remove Paint from Wood I'll demonstarte the actual wood stripping process and show you the aftermath of harsh chemical paint removers. Then we'll review the steps you'll need to restore the woods surface before finishing.
Paint removers wreak havoc with wood fibers. The first step after removing paint is a thirough wash to remove old paint residue and stripper residue. Next we have to sand away broken wood fibers to smooth out the surface. The wood at this point has been beaten up badly so it's time to restore some lustre by adding an oil. I recommend bathing the wood with tung oil either Pure Tung...

      Hey J.J. Wool is okay. The only recommendation I would have is maybe use a 00 or 000 steel wool between coats. Hi Paul. It's OAK. I've been putting off staining and putting on a topcoat because I'm afraid I'll screw it up. I put so much time and effort into it. Have you ever misted with water as a wood conditioner instead of using a canned wood conditioner? It has a very cool pattern in the grain and I don't want to oversaturate it.

    • @paulsDIYsolutions
      @paulsDIYsolutions 4 дня назад

      @@Aydansmamma OK Aydan. You don't have to condition oak. It accepts stain evenly so conditioning will only weaken the color. The problem with going too high (fine) a grit with a wood like oak is the sanding dust will clog the wood's pore and the syain won't absorb properly. You don't have to go all thye way back and start over but you should do everything in your power to remove as much sanding dust as possible. An air compressor would be better than a vacuum. But using both would be the best. After that's done wet (dampen, not soak) the wood with either water or paint thinner to raise the grain. Then sand with a 180 grit and remove the sanding dust. Then apply your stain. I recommend using my Flood and Wipe technique as outlined in my videos. best . . . paul

    Hi Paul, Great info here as well as your 5 basic types of finish video. Thank you! Question: I am refinishing the outside of the front door of our house. It is a beautiful custom made walnut and steel custom door. It looks like it was originally coated with a spar varnish about 10 years ago. The wood has bleached to a yellowish color over the years from the sun (We live in Arizona at 7,000 feet elevation so we get lots of UV light!). I'm sanding down through the original finish and bleached wood to expose the dark walnut underneath. My question is what finish to apply to block the UV light to keep the walnut from bleaching so fast and still have a natural look? I'm thinking your combo finish might be a great answer - hoping the tung oil will block the UV rays and the spar varnish will add weather resistance. I don't really want to use a dark stain to block the UV because my wife and I love the natural look of dark walnut and don't really want a dark stained look. Thanks for all your help!

    • @paulsDIYsolutions
      @paulsDIYsolutions 9 дней назад

      Hey Ron. Sounds beautiful. Both are UV resistant finishes. You might do the first coat using only the oil to add lustre to the wood. Then you can do a coat or two as a combo. Once you add spar varnish to the mix the wood will stop soaking up the oil. best . . . paul

      Hey Ron. Most manufacturers advertise one coat. The problem with one coat is it looks like it was applied in one coat. My technique is to apply 2 or more coats (depending on usage). The object is to apply thin coats and build thickness with multiple thin coats rather than a single coat. Water-based polyurethane tends to be thinner out of the can so you can thin a little less if you're concerned. best . . . paul

I got the paint off yesterday but think I need another pass with the stripper but was afraid it would damage the wood. Mineral spirits wasn't removing the gumminess left. Question: the doors have woven wood (much finer than cane). The paint is coming up but will take some work to get it out of the grooves. I tried a nylon brush but think I need to get more paint lifted with the remover first. Any ideas of how to get that off?? Thanks in advance!

      Good Morning Paula. I am a retired chiropractor myself! That's a tuff project. Strippers are pretty tough stuff and thin strips of wood can be easily damaged. You'll need a fine bristle brush (like a soft toothbrush bristle) to get into the weaves. Also I would switch to a lacquer thinner for cleanup. Be careful though I assume the woven part was glued to a piece of solid wood and depending on the glue used the woven wood may lift. I'm not recommending this (some danger) but I used my air compressor after applying stripper to highly detailed carvings on my mother's hope chest. It worked but there is a contact risk. best . . .paul

      @@paulsDIYsolutions Hi Paul! Well isn't that a fun fact! I didn't think chiropractors ever retired! Where did you practice? I made a lot of progress on my dresser today. I did another coat of Citristrip which pulled all the gumminess off. Then I used the paint thinner to wipe the excess and that worked beautifully just like you said! The paint is coming off the woven part but that is really gummy too. I may try to paint remover on that. I'll keep you posted! Thanks for the quick reply!

    Paul, just discovered your channel. Didn't know you are supposed to thin poly before applying. At any rate I have a desk that I have applied two coats of poly to without dilution. Should I dilute the 3rd coat or do it without to finish the desktop,

      Hey Ed. Two coats at full strength is probably all the protection you'll need. Just take the material from a brown paper bag and do a light sanding to remove any dust that may have settled while drying. Thanx for watching and commenting. best . . . paul

      @@paulsDIYsolutions Paul, I went ahead and sanded the 2nd coat with 320 and mineral oil to reduce/prevent scratching. I then thinned the poly and applied the 3rd coat a few minutes ago. It sure was easy to apply the thinner poly. Just about to do another large section of my office desk with the thinned poly for all 3 coats. Thanks again for sharing your expertise and knowledge.

      Hey Paul. I wish I had never said that. I did apply full strength but it is a dark stairway, the only stairway to the homes bedrooms and I had four grandkids and three adults living there at the time. It came out okay but I would never do it again. I yse the material from a brown paper bag to remove dust nibs on the final coat. It's coarse enough to take them out yet fine enough so as not to change the sheen. best . . . paul P.S. Hey Chronic. I did a video on heat guns vs stripper awhile back. The issue I have with heat guns speed. I can strip 2-3 pieces in thge time it takes to one with a heat gun. The other issue that is becoming less prevelant is the fumes. If you're paint was leaded (pre 1978 paint) it vaporizes the lead. best . . . paul

      Hey Elizabeth. Yes but you have to wait for the finish to cure (dry all the way through) which can take 2-3 weeks depending on tempertaure and humidity. Otherwise you'll end up with a gummy mess. The alternative is to strip it which can be done immediately and since it hasn't cured it will actually come off easier. So the box stores around me have odorless and low odor mineral spirits. Will low odor mineral spirits work ok as a thinner in polyurethane? Also, for projects requiring a flat poly finish I've come across recommendations to use full gloss poly for all but the last coat or two. The rationale is the flattening agents make the finish more dull and opaque and that you'll get a better overall results this way. Thoughts?

    • @paulsDIYsolutions
      @paulsDIYsolutions 13 дней назад

      Hey paul. Yeah regular mineral spirits is very difficult to find these days. I have switched to paint thinner for thinning and cleaning equiptment. That's correct on the gloss coats ending with a satin coat. Too many coats of satin causes the finish to look cloudy. best . . . paul

    What's your take on spraying oil based polyurethane?

    • @paulsDIYsolutions
      @paulsDIYsolutions 14 дней назад

      Hey Paul. It's okay but when I spray I use lacquer. It's advantages far outweigh polyurethane for me. With lacquer you can spray additional coats within minutes of the previous coat. It requires no sanding. While manufacturers say you spray poly without sanding if you spray within 4 hours, you still have to give it time to setup. If not you get runs, drips and puddles. With lacquer the whole job (depending on size and complexity) can be done within an hour so it's quicker and you only have to clean your equiptment once. best . . . paul

    Hello, I've watched your video a couple of times because I'm about to polyurethane my stairs. I chose the premium oil minwax fast drying polyurethane. It says easy smooth application? I was about to do the three parts to one part paint thinner and I'm a little worried. It looks like the polyurethane is very thin already. Should I go ahead and put that one cup of paint thinner in there? Very unsure here.

    Hi Paul, thank you for your videos. I have just made two red oak vanities with 3 drawers on each side and doors in the middle and was wondering if you could give me any advice on how to poly them? I wasn't planning on polyurethaning inside the drawer banks or drawers themselves. I wish I could add pictures so you could have a visual of the project. Thank you.

    • @paulsDIYsolutions
      @paulsDIYsolutions 18 дней назад

      Hey Christopher. First off I would poly the inside of the drawer and door fronts. I assume this is going into a bathroom so the humidity can wreak havoc with seasonal wood expansion and contraction. Polyurethane on one side of wood will change moisture exchanges between the two sides which can lead to your polyurethane cracking and peeling. Second I don't know what advice you're looking for so typing a whole bunsh of random stuff is not efficient. I suggest you watch my video "How To Apply Polyurethane Without Bubbles, Puddles, Runs or Brush Marks | Updated" (link below). best . . . paul Video link ruclips.net/video/nxwMmjg4kIY/видео.html

    I’m a 63 yr old female who does her own home renovations. The big stuff like total gut and start over. I enjoy building what I need and saving furniture from the landfill. Too often men are confused when I talk about my projects. It seems the only way they can rationalize that a petite older woman can do “a man’s job”, is to learn it from RUclips. Women tell me I need to get a man. My reply to women is that anyone is capable. My reply to men is a bit longer. The short version is, that there are a lot of people selling half assed skills online. I learn from research and practice. I do watch RUclips videos, but I make sure I am an informed consumer. I look for those who believe in doing things well and correct. I have always had little patience for applying polyurethane. You sir have taught me that I am doing it all wrong.
